Here’s how to get free flights in Ireland

You know the way you read these stories about people who get free flights because they collected points using a special credit card offer and now they’re flying first class to Bali?

Well we have something very similar here in Ireland and the sad thing is, no one really knows about it.

Before I begin I just want to clarify that I am in no way sponsored by any of the companies that I mention – this is just a simple way to get free flights that I use myself – so I thought I would share it!

So SuperValu is one of the largest supermarket chains in Ireland – I don’t need to go into details about it we all know what SuperValu is.

And like many supermarket chains, SuperValu has a loyalty card. Again we’re all familiar with loyalty cards and how they work, right? You but something that costs €10, the till operator scans your card and you get 10 points, perfect!

Well what makes SuperValu different is what you can do with those points! SuperValu has teamed up with different companies like Eir, Debenhams, Bank of Ireland, Electric Ireland, and so on.

But another company, a company that interests us is Aer Lingus.

Now let’s talk about Aer Lingus for a second. Everytime you fly Aer Lingus you are asked to put in your Aer Club number. Aer Club is Aer Lingus’s version of a loyalty rewards programme and all it takes is an email address and some other information to setup – nothing out of the ordinary.

Everytime you fly with Aer Lingus you put in your number and you then earn “Avios” points for your flight. The amount of points you earn is dependent on the distance and class you fly.

The Avios points can be used to purchase upgrades and other flights not just with Aer Lingus but with British Airways, FlyBe, Iberia, and Vueling as well!

Okay so Avios is great, and I collect Avios points everytime I fly with Aer Lingus which is great, but what has that got to do with SuperValu and getting free flights?

free flights

Well, the great thing is that with SuperValu you can convert your points into Aer Lingus points (Avios)!

So I understand that you might think that that’s all well and good but it’ll probably take you ten years or similar to save enough points to purchase a free flight, but you’d be surprised how easy and possible it is!

Of course the amount you spend on your shop depends on your circumstances but let’s say you spend €150 a week feeding yourself and a couple people. That’s 150 points per week.

Take those 150 points per week and turn it into a year and you have 7,800 points, sounds like a lot, right?

Now what makes SuperValu and Aer Lingus’s partnership even sweeter, is that around once every 3-4 months, SuperValu and Aer Lingus offer double points!

And that is when you take your 7,800 points and turn them into 15,600 – score!

And 15,600 points is just shy of a free flight to San Francisco – the farthest Aer Lingus fly – or alternatively return flights to Paris for two during off-peak times.

But you might wonder about your vouchers. SuperValue send money-back voucher to their customers at three key points during the year: the run-up to Easter, August, and the run-up to Christmas.

You can convert your €2.50 vouchers into Avios points, or you can convert them in advance of these three times! For special Disney or Gordon Ramsey tokens you collect these as usual and can use them at your disposal.

There are a myriad of ways to earn points online as well. Buying all of your Christmas gifts in Argos/Currys/Easons/M&S? Great – earn points for every euro you spend in these shops.

And often it’s not just one point you earn for every euro you spend – it’s usually 2 or 3 and I’ve even seen 10 points on offer for every euro spent.

Thinking of joining Eir? Have 2,500 points. Signing up with Bank of Ireland – take 500 points!

Now if I was to say to you that you could earn return flights to anywhere, let along the city of love, for just doing something that you’d do anyways, then I can imagine you would take that offer in a heartbeat!

The thing is, if you are smart about it, you can make your money stretch so much further than you realise.

So there you have it, the easiest, non-scammy way, to earn free flights just by doing something that you would do anyways!

So what are you waiting for? Get yourself a SuperValu loyalty card, sign-up to Aer Lingus and their Aer Club and away you go!

Again, I am not paid or sponsored to do this post by anyone, just thought it was a pretty handy way of earning some free flights and every little helps!

Take a look at SuperValu’s reward partners and Aer Lingus’s Aer Club if you haven’t already setup an Aer Club account – if you have flown with Aer Lingus recently you may be able to add in your flights and collect some points.
