Experiencing the best of the Bairro Alto
Lisbon’s Bairro Alto has hands down one of the best bar scenes around Europe and that’s coming from someone who has lived and worked in Dublin his entire life.
The area of southern Lisbon has something to offer people of all ages, interests and budgets. The food on offer in Lisbon is so diverse and interesting but once you’re finished there’s nothing better than journeying through a city and enjoying some drinks with great company.
Rua d’Atalaia was where we spent most of our time when we went out for drinks. This is a place for travellers, tourists and locals alike.
The only things that flows as free as the booze are the smiles and good times shared by everyone.
Bars can often be very similar to each other in what they offer, often small enough to fit at max 20 people, some places do offer more space but to really make the most out of the atmosphere then you will find yourself chilling outside of the bar.
Drinks are cheap, cheap, cheap. I’m talking two margarita’s for €5, cheap. Often cocktail and draught drinks come in sizes: small, medium, and large with large being very large!
I would consider the medium sized cocktails to be the average size of cocktail here in Ireland and the large cup of draught beer to be the same as a pint.
Everyone is different when it comes to alcohol, their tolerance and how they cope with alcohol but if you know in yourself that you are a lightweight then be careful because these drinks are strong! Shots are often around the €1 / €2 mark so a round of Tequila isn’t going to break the bank!
Once you’re finished drinking or want to get a bite to eat beforehand, check out these three amazing – and cheap – places to eat around Lisbon.
Perfect for students, parties, groups, the Bairro Alto is the perfect place to go out and party! When it comes to getting home taxis are quite cheap, just like everything else in this wonderful city so you don’t need to worry! Go out and have fun!
