Dublin City, a tale of three magnificent burger joints

Nothing quite beats a good burger! And Dublin City doesn’t shy away from offering some decent burger joints.

I’m sure you can find a decent Kobe beef burger somewhere in this wonderful city, but that’s not within everybody’s price range, nor is it the most practical.

I love a decent burger. There are so many elements to them and the best part about them is you can pretty much customise them as much as you like.

What makes a great burger is freshness of the ingredients, the quality of the beef, and how it is prepared.

I’ve sampled a fair whack of burgers in the city but these three offerings stick out in my mind!

The following three places were selected because they either offer something unique, something of fantastic quality and value, or downright some of the tastiest burgers.

Also if you are vegetarian I haven’t forgotten about you as two of these places have vegetarian options that have gotten the green thumbs up from my girlfriend!

In no particular order:

Bóbós

I first discovered Bóbós last year and boy am I glad I did.

The restaurant: The setting is small but not cramped, friendly, warm, and inviting. The walls are covered in paintings of fields and farmland and it is a genuinely nice feeling place to have a meal.

The staff: The staff are extremely friendly and service is perfect. What’s even better is they know how to pour a decent pint of Guinness and that isn’t said lightly!

The burgers: The best thing bout Bóbós is of course, their burgers. They have a massive selection of burgers for you to choose from and I’m not just talking about beef; they have chicken, lamb, pork, and some tasty vegetarian options as well.

They use 100% Irish beef – the best beef in the world – and their towering burgers bring a smile to your face as well as your stomach when you start eating.

Bóbós don’t just do standard toppings like lettuce tomato and onion, no; I’m talking about Cashel Blue cheese, jalapeño red pepper sauce, tomato relish, and grilled pineapple to name a few. The sheer range  of toppings and variations of burgers available at Bóbós makes it a visit well worth your time and money.

If you have a sweet-tooth their malt chocolate shakes are gorgeous. Their cheapest burger starts at €6.75 and rises to €12.75 for their most expensive.

Alcohol can be pricey but their milkshakes and malts are reasonable.

My favourite: The Deli Rings burger.

Suitable for vegetarians: Yes.

Captain Americas

I bet you probably weren’t expecting to see some place like Captain Americas on this list but stay with me. We are all aware of the typical Captains’ setup, décor, and offering but they have an amazing lunch deal which I’m not too sure many people are aware of.

Monday to Friday from 12-5pm Captains offers a lunch special for €10 which includes fries, salad or baked potato, and a glass of rosé, Heineken, or soft drink.

That is a serious deal in the city and one that shouldn’t be sniffed at. We all like good deals but what makes this deal stand out is that one of the options is the “Captain’s Cajun Chicken Burger” which is arguably the nicest burger on their entire menu.

The focus here is really on the chicken and the sauce. The sauce is a little bit spicy but extremely tasty and they pour enough of it on so it flows out of the burger and altogether it is just a gorgeous burger.

Most of the time I like to go for beef burgers as I find chicken burgers can really be hit and miss, however in Captains they have this one down perfectly, and for €10 together with fries and a drink, you really can’t go wrong.

The Veggie burger is also superb so you really can’t go amiss here. The chicken and veggie burgers are normally €14.95 and €12.95 respectively.

My favourite: Captain’s Cajun Chicken Burger.

Suitable for vegetarians: Yes.

Bunsen

Ahhh Bunsen. If you’re looking for a genuine burger that’s no fuss, simple, and all about the taste; then look no further.

The restaurant: Bunsen restaurants are pretty hip. They don’t over-do the style of the restaurant but dark tones and a modern-look fashion this place into a trendy spot.

Most importantly it is clean and comfortable.

The Staff: The staff like in the other two restaurants are professional and friendly.

The Burgers: The choice of burgers are as follows: Hamburger – single or double, Cheeseburger – single or double. And the toppings: Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickle, Mayo, Mustard, Ketchup. You can pick and choose your toppings at no extra cost – I always go for everything because it makes for a truly gorgeous burger.

Bunsen burgers are made with Black Aberdeen Angus beef supplied by the famous Moore St. butchers FX Buckley, their burger bun is made to their specifications daily, by a baker in Tallaght, and their toppings are always fresh.

What makes Bunsen burgers so tasty is that they are made with simple ingredients, done right. They spent time discovering different tasting beef, buns, and toppings; figuring out which is the best. Once they found the perfect combination they stuck to it and what we’re left with is one of the finest tasting burgers in all of Dublin.

The cost of a hamburger is €6.95 and the cost of a cheeseburger is €7.45 and toppings are free. To make either a double, add €2.

My favourite: Single cheeseburger with all toppings.

Suitable for vegetarians: Only sides suitable.
