Torre de Belém – Belém Tower
If you are fan off scenic views, beautiful architecture, history or have just nothing planned for your day, Torre de Belém is the place for you.
Charging €6 for adults and €3 for students the Belém Tower is a cheap and wonderful tour for all to enjoy.
My girlfriend and I spent a few days in Lisbon this
week and decided it was well worth our time to make the short trip to go and see the tower.
When we arrived the queue was short and the staff were really approachable. There was a line for people who had prepaid for their tickets and those that didn’t so if you think that you will definitely go, it’s well worth your time to pre-book.
After getting our ticket and entering the bastion it felt as if we were stepping through time. Exploring this tower that at one point in its life served as a defensive tower on the river Tagus, as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon, a lighthouse, a customs station, and now finally a UNESCO world heritage site, made us feel truly lucky.
While the bastion was unique and interesting, the tower was the real attraction. Boasting floors for different ceremonies, turrets and a steep, windy, spiral staircase, the tower was a lot of fun to explore.
The turrets on the top floor are a great place to look over greater Lisbon and at the other sites Belém has to offer. Looking over the Tagus river on a sunny day is stunning and nothing like I’ve ever experienced before in Europe.
In short, Belém Tower is a beautiful place to go visit. Not only is it cheap, but it is easily accessible and surrounded by many other fun things to do! It is definitely worth the trip!
